In vehicles equipped with a regenerative-control DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), continued use in light engine load conditions such as low-speed driving and frequent engine shutdowns causes the DPF automatic regeneration control (combustion removal of collected particulates) to operate for extended periods. This results in diesel fuel injected into the engine for regeneration mixing into the engine oil beyond expected levels. Continued operation in this state allows oil contaminated with diesel to be drawn into the intake manifold via the crankcase ventilation passage and burn in the cylinder, producing abnormal noise and white smoke. In severe cases, this may cause engine speed increase, engine stalling, and failure to restart.
