In low-floor dual rear-axle drive vehicles, the propeller shaft coupling (companion flange) between the rear front and rear rear axles has improper backlash in the mesh, causing wear on the spline portion of the rear rear axle pinion gear shaft and resulting in loosening of the castle nut. Alternatively, improper tightening of the castle nut causes wear on the spacer collar between the shaft bearings, damaging the bearings and loosening the castle nut. If operation continues in this condition, the cotter pin retaining the castle nut may fracture, causing the companion flange to separate, or the pinion shaft may fracture. In the worst case, the propeller shaft may become detached, resulting in loss of drivability. Remedy
Replace the final reduction gear assembly with a serviceable unit on all vehicles. As supply of serviceable units requires time, as an interim temporary measure, inspect the installation condition of the companion flange and replace any defective units with serviceable ones. Non-defective units will be replaced with serviceable ones at a later date.
