Checking a recall in Cyprus — common questions

Whether you're an owner asking "is my car affected?" or a buyer vetting a used import before you pay, these answer the questions people most often ask.

How do I check if my car has a recall in Cyprus?
Search recalls.cy by make, model and year on the Recalls page, or enter your VIN or chassis number on the Check page (recalls.cy/check). We cover the official recall registers from Japan (MLIT), the EU Safety Gate and Cyprus (RTD) — the markets Cyprus imports used cars from. It's free, and you should always confirm any match with the official source and your dealer.
How do I check a recall by VIN or chassis number?
Go to recalls.cy/check and enter the VIN or chassis number. We match it against exact Cyprus VIN registries and Japanese (MLIT) chassis-number ranges. A 'no match' is not a guarantee the car is clear — EU recalls are matched by make, model and year on the Recalls page, and no database is complete — so confirm with the official source and a dealer.
Does a recall from Japan apply to my right-hand-drive car here?
Usually yes. We deliberately cover Japan and other right-hand-drive, left-hand-traffic markets, because the cars Cyprus imports are the same right-hand-drive vehicles those recalls were issued for. A recall from a left-hand-drive market may not apply to the same model in right-hand-drive form, which is why we scope to Cyprus's actual import region. Always confirm your exact VIN with a dealer.
Is the Takata airbag in my Japanese import dangerous?
Takata airbag inflators are the subject of one of the largest safety recalls ever and can rupture and fire metal fragments. If your imported car is affected it is a safety-critical recall — do not ignore it. Search your make, model and year here, look for the red 'Dangerous' badge, and contact your dealer before driving. To be alerted the moment a new recall is issued for your exact VIN, recallscheck.cy (https://recallscheck.cy) monitors your specific car.
Are UK or Irish recalls relevant to cars in Cyprus?
EU Safety Gate recalls apply Cyprus-wide regardless of which EU country notified them, so an alert that came through Ireland is still relevant to the same vehicle here. We include the EU Safety Gate feed for exactly this reason. If you're buying a used import, it's worth checking the car's history and auction condition report too — cartrust.cy (https://cartrust.cy) does that for Japanese imports.
My car isn't listed — is it safe?
Not necessarily. recalls.cy aggregates official recalls and machine-translates them, but the database may not list every recall — Cyprus model data in particular is often unavailable at source — and a recall may simply not exist yet. 'Not listed' means we found no matching recall, not that the car is guaranteed defect-free. Confirm with the official source and your dealer, and for ongoing peace of mind set up a free SMS alert or per-VIN monitoring.
I'm buying a used import — how do I vet it for recalls before I buy?
Before you pay, search the make, model and year on recalls.cy and check for any safety-critical (red 'Dangerous') recalls, then ask the seller whether the recall work was carried out. A recall that was never remedied is a real cost and a safety risk. For the car's wider history and the original Japanese-auction condition report, cartrust.cy (https://cartrust.cy) verifies used imports before purchase.
